Guitar Grid 101 - How To Play in Minor Keys

PSWBRB

Question

On page 27 of the Pros Make It Look Easy PDF, I am trying to follow the three fret move to play the minor scale, but something is not clicking for me.

The instruction is "to play in a Minor key, simply find the “key note”, then move 3 frets up (toward your body on the E string) and start Scale Pattern 1 from there."

There's a disconnect for me as to starting three frets up and hearing a minor scale. Do you happen to have a tab image or short vid to clarify?

Thanks in advance,

Brad

Hey @PSWBRB slow to the take here, but I may have an answer for you.

This IS a minor scale, it just may not sound like it to your ears, because when you slide 3 frets up, the first note is not the "keynote" of the minor scale. When you slide 3 frets up to play in a minor key, instead of starting on the first note, try starting with the 4th note in the pattern - this will make it sound much more "minor-y" to your ears. If you can play the original major scale pattern, then tabs or video won't clarify anything, as you already know how to play the pattern.

Ive seen so many confused from that statement. Another way of looking at it is in the modes module. If you play pattern 2 Dorian or pattern 6 Aolian those are minor scales. Theory ive read says any scale with flattened 3rd note is minor. Of course you could also play Am pentatonic, i'll attache a sheet showing it starts at low E fret 5 the A note, but equally you can shift the pattern to any other position fret 3 would be Gm etc. Hope this helps.
