The Melodies and Tones

Glenn Gay

Question

What can I say. Maybe it is that I am getting old, but I tend to lean toward the more mellow and melodic tones today. Don't get me wrong - AC/DC is still my favorite band of all time, and SRV my favorite guitarist, but, I find myself learning more and more Neil Young, or Matt Anderson, James Taylor, that sort of stuff. Big Keith Urban and Eric Church fan as well.

It's all a matter of taste, but AC/DC and SRV are the light end of my spectrum. I'm 50, but I still aspire toward Marty Friedman (while with Megadeth), Jeff Waters (of Annihilator), Jake E Lee (while with Ozzy). When I'm feeling a little lighter, I look toward EVH (in any era), Steve Vai, and Warren DiMartini (of Ratt). Don't get me wrong, I love to improvise over a 12-bar blues riff as much as anyone and pretend to be BB King or Clapton. But I just like a bit more edge and a bit faster pace.

To me, often times there is more harmonic content in some of the slower songs. Better melodies and chord arrangements. Big SRV fan as well, but when you listen to the fingerpicking work of James Taylor, Michael Johnson, Neil Young it all just seems to be more satisfying musically. If you want to listen to something that is melodic, slow and has incredible Tension and Release, listen to Bach's Air on G String. Seems like a simple slow song when it starts, but wow!!

@sklaft - I never did get into Annihilator, or Megadeth, BUT, I am an Ozzy & Sabbath lover, and EVH goes without saying. I guess my preferences have mostly to do with my upbringing. I had 2 older brothers that were PURE Outlaw Country back in the day, and as a kid I used to sit in on their jams. As I grew up I was more into Zeppelin, The Who Def Lepper - the more Rock side of things and a little less metal. Although, I loved Iron Maiden and Quiet Riot who are somewhat Metal, but the much lighter side

I'm a big James Taylor fan too Glenn, one of my dreams is to be able to play Steamroller, Suite for 20G, and Baby Don't Loose your Lip on Me and about 30 others 🙂 . Keep having fun! BTW I've been to Novia Scotia, about 35 years ago, man is it beautiful, I'll never forget it. Peace
