Confusion on a lesson

Question

I just completed my first lesson "How the Pros make lead guitar look Easy". At the end it talked about moving down the fret board 3 frets to play the scale pattern 1 in a minor chord. The example was to play it in A minor. It says to start at the A Major on the 7th Fret and move up 3 frets to play in A minor but that's C Major? Hence my confusion and question.

Also in an earlier lesson it said that as you move up the neck say one fret up from the G chord that is Gsharp or if moving the other way its A flat, so I assume G sharp and A flat are actually the same??? Can someone explain? I am heading out to practise so If I get an answer and don't respond that's why. Thanks in advance

@Kevin LWhen going up from G the note on the fret board in between is called G sharp you are almost A but not quite. Going the other way, you are almost to G but not quite, so you are A flat. They are the same note just depends on which way you are heading and how it is written on the staff.

By moving up 3 frets and using scale pattern one the notes used are also included in A minor pentatonic scale. it just uses all 7 notes of the minor scale.

Lots of people get confused when they read move 3 frets (u also see start with pinky to go to major). I don'y like / use that concept for myself, maybe ok for some but I always play from selected root note either in major or minor pentatonic or use 1 of the 7 major scale patterns, if I want minor use 5 Aeolian or 2 Dorian or 3 Phrygian. Look at those patterns, sée the 3rd note is flattened depicting minor key.

obvious you choose which ever is easiest for you.

Hi Kevin. Just look a couple of posts a bit earlier replying to Justin. I attached a pic which shows/explains intervals it should help you. I've been a BTG member 2 years now, seen so many ask about the that move frets & play from pinky or other finger statement. Myself I would find it confusing (different start note). If you understand OK. But I always use major or minor pentatonic (5 notes) or the major scale patterns from the chosen key note. If you want to play minor keys use either Dorian 2, Phrygian 3 or Aeolian 6. Note that Aeolian is ame as minor pentatonic but with the extra 2 notes. You will see I've posted patterns a few times. (there shown in grid mastery)
