Total Disorder
I have a question about these 2 one string scales. The major one string scale is where the 7 patterns start on the root note. The Pentatonic one string scale only has 5 patterns and 6 notes on the one string scale . I'm not sure where to start witch Pentatonic patterns one the one string scale. Also ,at the end on the Pentatonic lessons he shows how the Major scales and the Pentatonic scales overlap each other . This part makes sense somewhat but how to the one string scales overlap each other ? I wish there was a diagram of the 22 frets ,color coded with both Major, Pentatonic and one string scales to print out for reference. Yves Cadieux
Hi TD! I read your question a few times and here is my understanding of it: first, the Pentatonic scale has only 5 notes as is name suggests (penta=5). These notes are notes 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 of the 7 notes major scale (I am talking about the major Pentatonic scale here). For example, the regular 7 notes of the F Major scale are: F G A Bflat C D E and back to F. The 5 notes of the F Major Pentatonic scale are: F G A C D and back to F. Pattern 1 starts on F, pattern 2 starts on G, pattern 3 starts on A, pattern 4 starts on C and pattern 5 starts on D. All starting notes being located on the low E (6th) string. So 5 notes, 5 patterns. Hope it helps! YC🎸
Alan Desmond
Ive posted this a few times before, its the Am pentatonic for pat's 1-4. Dont think of it as individual patterns mix between them as suits your music. Hope it helps, by the way if you want a different key like G, B, D, you just slide the whole to start at your new key note. Try it and mix iylt up
Total Disorder
Thanks for the reply"s and it helps . The ultimate question is all of it overlapping each other. Pentatonic scales make sense ,Major scales make sense . Major one string scale lines up with Major scale patterns ,this makes sense. Pentatonic one string scale i guess i have to add major notes to it the have the 5 Pentatonic scales line up with it ?
Alan Desmond
Remember 2 frets along and 3 up to the next octave. Course dont forget B string & warp zone, then 3 along. In short suggest play with octaves. Proficiency, practice & learn key note positions. Mix it more than 1 string scale, the mix chords & triads into the playing. Pick pattern from published chords (like ultimate guitar is where I start). Then you can make ur own arrangements of favourite songs. Have fun. Pentatonic i posted u can add notes that suits your song or riff remember in 4 fret stretches there are the two major pattern notes. Lots of songs use them, have a look at Gilmore noyes in the musical ideas module, hope this gives inspiration.
Alan Desmond
Hi again, your dead right, remember with pentatonic you've two major scale notes in the two 4 fret streches. You'll see its described in the course unit. But also check your fretboard note chart to see the adjacent major notes just outside the pattern. Me as part of my daily exercise plan i play the Aminor pattern i posted some time ago. I dont play the major notes going up in pitch across the strings but inset them coming back down, then inset th B note on fret 7 and back on pattn2. Just mix your practicing up so it sounds nice. Cheers now Alan
